What is SSL VPN?

SSL VPN (Secure Socket Layer Virtual Private Network) is a one variety of VPN connection technique, allows users to remotely access restricted network resources via a secure and authenticated though with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol. SSL VPN does not require the installation of specialized client software on the end user’s device. It’s similar to used in normal HTTPS connections on Web Browsers.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) protocol provides data encryption and authentication between applications and servers in scenarios where that data is being sent across an insecure network,  that allows two clients to communicate with each other in a secure way.

Why do you need SSL VPN?

You could be ask for yourself this questions, why we need to add this second encryption level of SSL VPN layer, we have already one encrypted layer of VPN connection? Even with a VPNs, it is almost impossible for surfers in China to bypass the Great Firewall‘s geographical restriction system. The reason behind the crack on VPN services in China is because the Great Firewall contrive by using a sophisticated filtering protocol, known as “Deep Packet Inspection” (DPI) that enables it to recognize the kind of data passing through its tunnels, i.e: VPNs and Proxies, and therefore, blocking them. They cannot see the inner layer of the network (which is your activities on the internet) but they can determine your network connection is a VPN and moreover they even know which VPN you have used.

SSL VPN hides your VPN connection completely from advanced network analysis and gives you better accessing and unblocking experience in your school, work or geo-restricted area. Currently China, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Pakistan are using this techniques in ISP (Internet Service Provider) grade to determine and block  the VPN sessions. SSL VPN makes your VPN traffic virtually identical from regular SSL traffic ( which indistinguishable from secured website connection) , because Great Firewall (GFW) like firewalls cannot perceive this additional layer of encryption with using Deep Packet Inspection .
